Sunset
The other day, Jeremy and I were headed in the Beast Buggy toward the backside of the property, looking for a better view of the spectacular sunset we knew was coming. We ended up on a side quest with an animal emergency. As I saw the sunset glowing through the trees, I appreciated the tiny portion I could see, but was disappointed in not getting to see the whole thing. Once the emergency was taken care of, Jeremy suggested we keep riding in search of the end of the sunset. I went along with him, even though I was certain we had missed it. We broke out of the tree line and were rewarded with this:
Was it the sunset I was hoping for?
No.
But it was beautiful in its own way. The blanket of clouds overhead reflecting the last of the sun’s warmth. That one taller tree sticking out by itself. The soft grey, pink, blue, and yellow-orange. The silhouette of the tree line. Beautiful.
As we were sitting there, my phone dinged. Two friends had both sent me their views of the sunset on Snapchat.

Also beautiful, and if i’m honest, similar to what I had been hoping to see. But notice this - even their two views were different. Three different photos taken in the same-ish community, at slightly different times, produced drastically different outcomes.
As I sat there, I was thinking about how each sunset is different. And each view of the same sunset is different. Even Jeremy and I sitting beside each other I would imagine noticed and appreciated different parts of it. So, as I thought, I started writing (as I often do). Here’s what came of it.
Sunset
Vivid orange, yellow, red
Burst in flames above my head
In contrast with the shades of blue
That constitute the evening’s hue
Ever changing, ever shifting
As the sun is lower drifting
Drawing down with it the fire
Sunk in the horizon’s mire
Giving way to twinkling lights
Stars like fireflies in the night
And tomorrow’s sunset and its glory
Will tell a completely different story
Each one special in its own way
Heralding the close of day.

Such a great sunset with a beautiful poem
